Why We Are Here

August 1 - 4, 2008

Finally, although we still have a few odds and ends to take
care of (mostly cosmetic), we had an entire weekend of FUN!
That's why we built this place. And you know what? It is awesome.

Before I talk about fun, I have to show you a picture
of the bunk bed steps, which are now finished.

As usual, Mike did a great job.
They're even sturdy enough to hold me.

This is my animal art. The "frame" is an old cupboard door
I bought at a salvage place then sanded and stained.

It hangs on the wall above our bed.

These are the curtains I made for the kids' room (also
the guest room). A matching quilt is in the works.

Now, I can talk about the fun...

Remember, the whole reason we bought this place in West Virginia
was so we'd have a "base" for motorcycle rides. The roads around here
are FAR better than the roads around our Maryland home. Our good friends
Kathy and Barry Spice joined us for a weekend of riding and relaxing.

They arrived around midday on Friday. We didn't wait long before
setting off on a scenic ride to dinner. Mike snapped this picture
while we were riding. I was leading, Barry followed with Kathy as
his passenger, and Mike brought up the rear.

Here's another picture Mike took while riding.

Mike snapped this one as we parked at the restaurant.
We finally found real Mexican food in Hampshire County! At a place
called El Puente on Route 50 in Capon Bridge. The food is fantastic.
It was so good that Mike and I went back on Sunday for lunch.

The first time we've had three motorcycles in the garage.

Barry got us going right away with some tasty margaritas.

Kathy was close by, waiting for the first taste.

And here I am, doing nothing in particular.

The first order of business on Saturday was taking the dogs for their
morning stroll down the hill. Max Spice, the yellow lab, joined us.

Here's Meg enjoying her favorite activity in the whole world...running.

Here we all are just before setting off on our big Saturday ride.

Barry led off and was able to snap this photo of me and Mike pulling in behind him.

Mike waved as he rode past Barry.

I just smiled and kept two hands on the handlebars.

Mike was the designated leader. Even though I planned the route.

Kathy and Barry wait patiently as Mike gasses our bikes up.
That isn't cold-weather gear they are wearing, it is safety gear.

I took this picture of a field behind the gas station.

Here we are at our first stop on US-219 just north of Parsons, West Virginia.

Kathy snapped this picture on the way.

This one, too.

And this one. As you can see, it is quite picturesque.

Mike and Kathy goofing for the camera. Note the wind turbine behind them.

There is a group of these large wind turbines plainly visible from the road.

After a brief potty stop in Parsons, it was off to Elkins for lunch.

Elkins was a nice little town.

Here we are, gassing up again. It was a long ride.

Kathy and Mike relax after we all arrived safely, if slightly damp, back
at the cabin. We got rained on a little bit, but the ride was fabulous.

Barry quickly got busy grilling up some dinner for us.

Kathy and Max left pretty early on Sunday. Here's Barry just about to take off.

It was awful quiet after they all left. We told them to come
back again. The weekend was lots of fun for everyone.
